Johnny VS Zombies

"Nice short"

submission: Johnny VS Zombies
date: October 29, 2009

Some really funny little bits and pieces cobbled together to make a very funny and well animated little flash piece. I love the different tunes that you've used to get it sounding right, combined with your interesting cartoon drawing style, which has been complimented by some great animating.

I guess the resounding success of this can be attributed to both you and Trevor, so thanks to you both for raising a smile in this house and I look forward to seeing more of what you've got, as your career is very promising already.

While I'm still not sure about how you put in the Michael Jackson link (I know about Thriller, but I just didn't see it coming), you've even managed to throw a vaguely tasteful tribute in there as well.

Thanks a lot for that really good review! Thanks for taking time to make a good review, I make flash for good reviews like these!

Btw, who is Trevor? Are you talking about the other guy who reviewed?

LL - TCLL Episode 1

"Nice looking"

date: October 28, 2009

I quite like the way you've put this together - quick set 'em up, knock 'em down plays with the gags, though you could put a few more gags in each episode. Perhaps have something like a camping trip and someone forgets to bring the food, or something essential like that.

I think that you've got a good format, with very nice drawing and animation style and I can certainly see that you've settled into the Lock Legion nicely. I look forward to seeing more of these in the near future.

LL - In the Slums

"A little depressing"

submission: LL - In the Slums

Man, this flash does kind of hammer home the message that things aren't as bright and rosy as they used to be. I can see that people try to do things to help, but what are you going to do to change it?

I think that the use of greys as the predominant colour scheme is a powerful symbolism and the way that SunshineLock still lives at the end of the piece shows that there is still hope. I just hope that you guys work out any differences and can carry on producing great flash.

The animation is good and so is the drawing. I'd possibly suggest making it longer and having us show who actually killed MagicWandLock, for example - it's got some potential for expansion, so think about it.

:3 this man understands symbolism.

once again, this is a flash i didn't spend too much time on, and honestly i think this is my least favorite of all my submissions. as always, thaks for your considerable well thought out review. <3

A Fishy Halloween

"Very Nice"

submission: A Fishy Halloween
date: October 28, 2009

Well, this is certainly a piece that's got a great affinity with me, for the audio sample is a great piece from Monty Python's Flying Circus. Not one of the most popular parts of "The Meaning of Life", I must say, but it still is a refreshing change to see that you've managed to tone down the surrealism of this whole sketch :P

I like the animation, but the drawings could have something a little more done to sharpen them up - perhaps a little more work or even just something like using a slightly finer drawing point when you come to make the images.

I'd have toned down the firework sound, as it was a very massive contract, compared to the sound of Terry Jones saying "And it went wherever I did go" to finish the piece off. A rather nice little flash that is a good stepping stone to bigger and better things.

LL - Campfire

"Well, I didn't see it coming"

submission: LL - Campfire
date: October 28, 2009

A nice little short with a pretty catch punchline and one of the best ever jokes from Airplane as well :P

I can see the idea behind killing LogLock to make a campfire, as he's a log and therefore made of wood, which will make a nice fire, but why Domino? Everyone knows that there's no meat on a domino, so he should be in the clear.

I'd have preferred it if you'd have had either Radish or Almond ask Domino's question, as then it would have presented a much better punchline, either that, or have them gang up on Marshmallow.

I think that the drawing style could use some work - it's not quite there yet, so try zooming in a little more and spending more time on your drawing, so that you can get a better, more rounded piece, with more crisp detail. It will make so much difference to your productions, I'm sure.

Author's Response:

lol, the joke is that domino is the only non food lock there, making him the silliest choice when it comes time to eat someone. i made this in one night while having an insomniac episode, so the details aren't gonna be there. i am working harder on some of my future projects, and i hope you enjoy them. thanks for the review!

LL - TCLL Episode 2

"A very nice piece"

date: October 26, 2009

Ah, it just goes to show that you really can have a lot of fun with some friends down by the lake. Not quite American Pie 2, but some of the humour seems to be heading that way.

The animation is smooth and well paced. I like the way that you deal with the issues like WineLock flying through the air like it did.

Perhaps you could have had that as a all back joke, like he was pissing off SharkLock and to get rid of him, Shark decides to just say Rape, which causes the same reaction.

I'm looking forward to what you can offer us for TCLL 3, as we really do need more tales per episode. Either that, or make them longer, as tale 3 might just have been a pre-episode gag that you throw in for shits and giggles.

Author's Response:

Detailed review. Wow.

Yeah I do need more content per episode but since I base this off of real life I can only conjure up so many funny stories at a time.

And I have no idea what you mean by an all back joke.

LL - Exorcist

"You did the right thing"

submission: LL - Exorcist

Calling a priest is probably the best thing that you could do in the case of Swine Flu. I love the way that this piece runs so smoothly and gives us a nice little joke or two.

Could have done with the music credit for Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells - it's one of the most popular tunes for things like that, so people should already know, but that's beside the point.

With the animation, perhaps slow down the Lock that flew overhead, as I couldn't recognise what it was as it passed overhead, while I could recognise the three main characters quite easily. Good animation, good drawing style, keep up the good work.

lol thanks for your review. i thought about slowing spork down, but it was funnier for me because spork's joke is one you could only get if you were a lock.

Beat up Sindri

"Not bad"

submission: Beat up Sindri
date: October 22, 2009

Okay, so I've got a few more attacks that you could use:

* 10 ton weight
* flamethrower
* tag team
* "call in a favour" - Mafia boss guns him down, after a phone call from Audunn
* black hole

I'd have found a different sound effect for the shovel - it should have a metallic ringing sound to it, for the complete effect. Perhaps a few lingering pieces of damage, so that you can do combos and make it look so much funnier.

I'm not too sure about the background, but the options to switch to things like a Japanese style dojo would be really cool. Trying things out like that, plus background music will really bring your pieces onward.

Finally, try a little more with the drawing style - try to get all of the eyes to look similar - some are dots, others are 'goofy' looking circles with off-centre circles for irises. If you need to, use the circle drawing tool for that, to simplify.

Donkey Dilemma *Fixed*

"Quite challenging"

date: October 22, 2009

Not a bad little game - good improvements and a well made engine, this is certainly a decent challenge that reminds me of Shrek. Of course, if it were an officially licensed game, there would be an Eddie Murphy voice over the top spouting out wise cracks if you made a mistake, or being completely over the top with congratulations if you got the end of the course.

The way that the constituent parts of the game board get mixed in for each level is a nice touch - I think that it could be improved by having a tutorial level, rather than taking up half the game with the introduction of extra bits and pieces.

Still, it's a marked improvement on the last one that you submitted - the free play and timed play option is great, plus the sped up donkey means that you don't get bored between levels, which is always a bonus. Perhaps a bigger variety of ambient music would help, since only one track can be a little obstructive.

Haunted Sprint

"Nice little game"

submission: Haunted Sprint
date: October 21, 2009

Vinny, you've got a certain flair when it comes to making good little games. The concept is quite simple, but it's very effective. I'd suggest that you do more for the introduction and give us a good run up to playing this piece, but other than that, it's pretty easy to master.

I thought I'd cracked it first time, but I was quite dismayed when the pumpkin turned into a ghost and got me. A nice sting in the tail, I feel and something that I probably should have known was coming.

A nice selection of music, a pretty simple control setup and overall quite a nice game.

I still consider myself a n00b when it comes to actionscripting. There's so much i'd love to learn about actionscripting.

after the Ghost... there's the angry ghost who is probably the toughest out of the 3 that you face. I will have more games on the way. I appreciate your reviews. Very helpful thanks.
